ARTIST STATEMENT:
Being an artist is often very solitary so I was excited when I had the opportunity to join a group of artists called Studio Zero, as it represented an opportunity to work across our continent, and perhaps exhibit in Venice together.
I often work with objects that I’ve found at council cleanup and have collected over time. A recycling of sorts. So I’ve been collecting thrown out nail polish and had amassed quite a collection of bright colours. They were waiting in my draw for an opportunity to express themselves. I’m normally a sculptor so this 2D format provided just the opportunity and challenge.
The image comes from a child’s playing in a dolls house. All the inhabitants were squeezed into one single room.
As I’ve recently retired I was looking forward to the opportunity to finally travel. But much of my past work has been about environmental issues. So I’m struggling with the very real impact that tourism is having on our planet.
I thought this overcrowded room an apt metaphor for my dilemma.
