Artist Statement

It is my personal observation that feeling “foreign everywhere” might just be a common experience of human being-ness in a world of spiritual conflation, mass migration and cultural integration.
Poles of opposition and inclusion can seem somehow comforting and enmity inevitable.

LAMENTATION
“Don’t call me Naomi”

2023 took me on two journeys away from Kangaroo Island. One to Venice in Italy, one to Central Australia. Vastly different cultural grounds yet resonating in me with similar personal dissonance.

Their varied conversations around histories, economies and politics along with eruptions in the global sphere heightened a growing Lament.  

Contested hopes and grievances seemed to surface in the “everywhere” and tumultuous realities of negotiating for our varying claims of entitlement and offence were put in high relief.
